Hi, My name is Nephenia. I'm 28 years old and I'm scheduled to ship out Oct 4th to Fort Jackson, SC. I'm really nervous about basic training as well as making one of the biggest steps in my life. I've read alot about the army and I've been reading all I can get my hands on about basic training, but I'm a worrier and I want to be as prepared as possible. I'm also nervous about being the oldest person in basic. I've been told by my recruiter and others that because of my age and the fact that I'll be an E3 when I go in that I will be given a "leadership role". I don't mind this per se, but I want to know what is exactly involved in this "leadership role". Also I will be going to Fort Sam Houston for AIT my MOS is 91C Practical Nurse and I will be there for approximately 62 weeks. Does anyone know whether or not my husband will be able to come with me there? If not will I still get BAH allowance for my husband? If anyone can answer my questions or just give me moral support I would greatly appreciate it:) Nephenia

I guess its not what you do but how you do it. Im older than you and also married and was thinking about going to school and becoming a nurse, but I was going to use the guard as a means to help me pay for my education. I admire you for going for it and wish all the best.

THis sounds exactly like my situation! I am supposed to leave in late Sept to SC and then to TX as a 91C Practical Nurse! I too am leaving my husband for 62 weeks and am scared to death. I haven't heard whether or not yet if he can be with me in TX because he is in the Air Force. I still have a lot of questions and I am also battling a weight problem. I am way over by weight, but really close on body fat. There won't be a problem with my weight in a couple of weeks, I know, but I am worried that I may be a target of ridicule due to my appearance. I can run, but I have trouble with my situps and pushups. Any encouragement that YOU can give would be helpful as well.

Hi Angie, Welcome aboard! The biggest thing I can tell you is to get as much information from your recruiter as possible. My recruiter didn't have alot of written material to give me to prepare me, but as I mentioned earlier I'm a worrier and I like to be prepared. So I've been investigating things on my own by interntet and going to the library. Anything you don't know be sure to ask your recruiter because I'm sure he/she will find out for you. Also start exercising NOW!! I'm not in the best of shape right now I'm right at the weight limit my body fat is perfect but I'd still like to lose a few pounds before I go and I need to build up my stamina. I've started doing push-ups and sit-ups and some walking. I need to increase the walking to running though. Just be encouraged and know that I know where you're coming from. We may even see each other at Sam Houston. Be encouraged. Let me know if I can be of any help to you:) Nephenia

Nephenia, I'm shipping out to Ft Jackson on Oct 3rd as a 37F. I wouldn't worry too much about basic training, it's a team effort. Everyone else in your unit will be going through the same thing you are, and most of them will be feeling the same pain too. When things get bad, your unit will be there for you, and vise versa. And with you being older you will probably be looked to when others are about to break down. Your position might seem to be an impossible task sometimes but you'll be learning a leason of a life time all while you are changing the lives of the people around you. I wish you the best of luck.

I'm not changing my mind-mind you, but I've asked myself the question quite often, "WHAT AM I DOING?" I feel that this is the direction the Lord wants me to go, so I'm just following His guidance. Thanks so much for the advice though because I really needed it:)Nephenia
