Hi, I'm 22 years old and am getting prepared to enlist in the Army.I read on the Army height/weight chart that I need to lose roughly about 20 lbs.I was wondering if you can help me figure how to lose and also build up strength to get ready for basic training.I'm also considering a MOS in the administrative or water treatment field. Please email me soon.

Hi! I am kind of in the same situation. But I am thinking of the Air Force although I havn't ruled the Army out. I am over the weight limit too. I have just started working out with my husband. He just got out of the army a few months ago. So he gives me a good workout! I am sure he is a little easier on me than a drill sgt. though!! Have you started any type of workout or diet? I would love to know how you are going about this too. Amy

Remember ladies, it defenitly is a good idea to get into shape now, but remember, if you are "overweight" by Army standards they will do a tape test to get your body fat. ALot of people, like myself, are "overweight" by the standards, but come in well under the body fat composition because of muscle build up. Prime example, I am 5"7 and weighed in at MEPS @ 179lbs., 20 lbs over their cutoff weight, but when they taped me my body fat was 21% and for my age I could be up to 34% body fat. We all know that muscle weighs more than fat, so go to your recruiter, let them tape you, then take it from there.
Good luck in your weight loss efforts......

Just a tip-the other woman was right about the tape test, but it is good to lose the weight b/c it can help you get around at BT, like the road marches you will have to do, the running you will be doing. I suggest starting out with some aerobics, I found that it helped me lose fat so that when I started weight training I wasn't turning that fat that takes up room into muscle, that is the way you would bulk up-which not many of us want to do. Or just start running, not long distances but set reasonable goals for yourself, ie a mile a 3-4X's a week and then up that once you feel that there is no challenge in that. Weight training is a great way to build lean muscle mass after you have lost the "fat". It helps you to keep burning the fat as well. If you have a local gym, you might try getting a personal trainer or you might have a friend who is into fitness that could give you tips, you can get good tips online as well. Hope that helps some. But, make sure you do cardio & weight training at the same time. Don't just do your cardio (running, walking, biking, etc..) to lose the weight, then do your weight training. You will lose weight, but you will also be flabby. Weight training while doing cardio will allow you to burn more fat even while you are resting. Of course take it slow at first, vary your exercises every week or two, meaning do different things so that your body won't get used to the same exercises and stop responding. Drink PLENTY of water before, during and after you exercise. Also make sure you stretch for flexibility. GOod luck to anyone preparing for Basic.
