Officers get a harder basic, get a snootier mess, and get more paperwork. They don't work quite as hard as enlisted (at least not in my unit). Enlisted men are always badmouthing them when their not around and whinnig about the priviledges they get. An enlisted men usually makes more than a junior officer, but the pay skyrockets after captain. If an officer gets captured, he is entitled to good treatment and exempted from manual labor, while enlisted personnel is not.

By GuyMisters response I am guessing he/she is an Non commisioned member. As a newly commisioned member I tend to dissagree with some of the stateents made. Firstly yes the training is harder, Officers do whet they do for basic and some. The Officers of today must go to university or college. They do have there own mess but it is not snootie, it has standards, Officers are expected to act there age and not like children. Yes there are good things to being an officer, It also looks extremly good on a resume. The standards are different and officers have different jobs then NCM's. The officers also deal with the politics that NCM's can't and won't deal with. They work just as hard , some times maybe even harder but just becasue most jobs held by officers aren't labour jobs doesn't mean they don't work as hard. When considering which way to go think of it this way. NCM's are doers and Officers are thinkers. Officers unlike some NCM's do not waste time sitting around whimppering about the NCM's they are more mature then that. People expect more from an Officer. I would never go back.

I have decided to apply via the direct entry officer route, and since you just received your commission (congratulations, by the way!), maybe you can answer a few more questions for me. Is basic officer training offered several times per year, or only during the summer? My first choice would be to go in the fall, but maybe they don't allow recruits to choose(?). What was the schedule like? (i.e. Any days off? Types of classes? How impossible is it to make the beds that way?) Thanks for your info and your time!!

For information on the lifestyle of people in Basic Officer Training ask a recruiter by phoning 1-800-856-8488, as for dates you can apply and will screen your application have you take an apptitude test, and a physical test as well as make sure you have all of the proper documents in and if you are accepted, they can start you on Basic Officer Training sometimes within months of you being approved depending on when, but you don't decide when you go with the exception of telling them how much time you need to rap up your personal affairs. As for bed making, it is far from impossible to do. And just for common knowledge the Canadian Forces does not use the Americanism enlisted, they refer to those personnel as Non Commissioned Members or NCMs, and NCO's or Non-Commissioned Officers for those ranking Corporal and above.
