02-08-2010 04:38 PM
The federal government and Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., are closed Monday as crews continue to clear several feet of snow from the roads before yet another snow storm hits Tuesday afternoon.Quantico is under a “code red”, meaning the base is closed for non-essential personnel, after the area got hit with up to 30 inches of snow this weekend. The blizzard also forced the federal government, which employs more than 200,000 people, to close up shop. The National Weather Service has issued a snow storm watch for the national capital region beginning Tuesday afternoon through Wednesday evening. The area is expected to get an additional 7- 10 inches of snow, with some estimates as high as another 20 inches. As of Monday morning, major highways were still packed with ice and snow, making travel difficult.Base personnel are prohibited from parking along snow emergency routes while the roads are being plowed, according to the Quantico Web site. For information regarding future delays or closures, go to www.quantico.usmc.mil or call the base hotline at 703-784-3638. Base employees and residents also can register for mass notifications alerts online.
