A Marine died Tuesday while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan, the Defense Department reported.

Lance Cpl. Noah M. Pier, 25, of Charlotte, N.C., was assigned to Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii-based 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines.

Pier is the third Marine killed this week in volatile Helmand. It was unclear whether fighting was part of the assault on the town of Marjah.
