HONOLULU – A missing jet skier is safe after being found treading water near Honolulu International Airport by a Coast Guard helicopter Saturday.



Watchstanders at the Sector Honolulu command center received notification from the Honolulu Fire Department that a 29 year-old soldier from Schofield Barracks departed Sand Island on a jet ski and failed to return. Friends reported him overdue at approximately 6:50 p.m. A passing vessel located the unmanned jet ski and reported it to the fire department.



A crew aboard a 25-foot Response Boat-Small from Station Honolulu arrived on the scene at approximately 7:40 p.m. and searched the navigable portions of Keehi Lagoon but was unable to locate the missing jet skier.



A Coast Guard aircrew piloting an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Barbers Point arrived at 8:10 p.m. and searched the non-navigable reef areas. The jet skier was located treading water south of the Reef Runway, near Honolulu International Airport. The helicopter deployed its rescue swimmer and safely hoisted the man from the water at 9:27 p.m. The man was delivered to emergency medical technicians in good condition at 9:40 p.m.



The jet skier was wearing a lifejacket. The Coast Guard recommends all individuals wear a lifejacket when riding aboard any watercraft, as they greatly increase the chance of survival during a maritime accident.



It is not known why the individual separated from his jet ski.
