BOSTON — U.S. Coast Guard crewmembers coordinated with Newbury harbormaster to recover two stranded kayakers near Plum Island River, Wednesday.

Coast Guard Station Merrimack River watchstanders received a 911 call relayed from Newbury Police Department from two kayakers who were stuck in mud near Little Pine Island Creek at 7:30 p.m.

Station Merrimack River watchstanders coordinated with Coast Guard Sector Boston watchstanders to launch a 25-foot Response Boat – Small to search for the kayakers. The RB-S crew was unable to reach the kayakers last known location due to darkness and shallow waters.

Sector Boston watchstanders diverted an Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from training to aid in locating the kayakers. The Jayhawk crew located the kayakers one mile south of their last know position. The kayakers were reported to not be in distress. The Jayhawk crew worked jointly with the Newburyport harbormaster’s shallow water response boat to direct them to the location of the kayakers.

The kayakers were taken to the Plum Island launch ramp by the harbormaster and checked by emergency medical services. Both kayakers were reported to be in good condition and released.

“Kayakers are reminded to be mindful of tide conditions in areas such as Plum Island Sound,” said Chief Petty Officer Gerald Welton, a 1stDistrict Command Center watchstander. “You must consider the dangers of boating at night.”
