LAKE CHARLES, La. —The Coast Guard continues to respond to a solvent leak south of the Calcasieu Ship Channel, Thursday.

The source of the leak was determined to be xylene from the vessel Chembulk New Orleans, which is moored at the Citgo refinery just south of the I-210 bridge. The leak was secured at 4 a.m.

Although the channel remains closed to recreational and deep draft traffic in the vicinity of the leak, some commercial vessels are being escorted through the safety zone on a case-by-case basis.

"The focus of the response is containment and proper removal of the remaining product from the surrounding environment," said Lt. Clint Smith, chief of prevention at Marine Safety Unit Lake Charles, and the unit's public affairs officer.

Crews are conducting air monitoring and there are no indications of immediate health risks.
