MEDIA ADVISORY: Coast Guard cutter to return home after 23-day patrol
PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The crew of a Coast Guard cutter, homeported here, is scheduled to return at noon Sunday, following a 23-day deployment to the Caribbean.
The Coast Guard Cutter Tampa’s deployment coincides with the 100-year anniversary of the launching of the first commissioned Tampa, Feb. 10, 1912.
The Tampa and crew patrolled for illegal narcotics, migrants and contraband during the deployment.
The Tampa and crew stopped in Cape Canaveral, Fla., Feb. 6, where they presented a Purple Heart award during a ceremony for Diane Vess in honor of her great-granduncle Charles Henry Klingelhoefer, a crewmember of the first commissioned Tampa, who was lost in combat during World War I.
The Tampa is a 270-foot medium endurance cutter.
Media interested in attending the Tampa’s homecoming at Coast Guard Base Portsmouth, 4000 Coast Guard Blvd., Portsmouth, Va., should contact Coast Guard 5th District Public Affairs at 757-398-6272 by 7 p.m. Saturday.
