What: Members of the media are invited aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Sturgeon Bay to observe a tactical demonstration of the newly-authorized LA51, a boater warning device for use in support of the Coast Guard’s Ports Waterways and Coastal Security mission.

Who: Lt. Michael Cortese, the Deputy Chief of Enforcement at Coast Guard Sector New York, and members of Coast Guard Station New York

The LA51 is a short-range warning device that produces a flash and loud noise and is used when other methods fail to get the attention of mariners in violation of local and federal laws or regulations, such as unauthorized entry to on-water security zones. Other warning methods for communicating with mariners include lights, siren and marine band radio. The LA51 is a safe addition to the current inventory of warning devices used by the Coast Guard.
