Multimedia Release: MSD Kodiak conducts port state control examination
KODIAK, Alaska — Lt. Matthew Zinn, supervisor for Marine Safety Detachment Kodiak, talks about what was involved during a port state control exam conducted on the motor vessel Siva Emerald by the Coast Guard May 21, 2012.
The Siva Emerald crew is in Kodiak to load round logs for delivery to China and is a 510-foot Panamanian-flagged motor vessel.

KODIAK, Alaska — Members of Coast Guard Marine Safety Detachment Kodiak review licensing paperwork and certificates with the captain of the Panamanian-flagged motor vessel Siva Emerald docked in Kodiak to load round logs for transport to China May 21, 2012.
The Coast Guardsmen reviewed the vessel's documentation during the course of a port state control exam aboard the 510-foot vessel.

The Coast Guard conducts port state control exams aboard hundereds of foreign flagged vessels operating in U.S. waters in ports around the nation each year to ensure they are safe, seaworthy and operating in accordance with all U.S. federal maritime regualtions.

The Coast Guard requires emergency systems and procedures be tested during port state control exams to confirm the crew is prepared to respond in the event of an emergency aboard the vessel in accordance with U.S. federal maritime regulations and the rules governing the safety of life at sea.
