NEW YORK- The Coast Guard Cutter Eagle held a reception for the National Maritime Historical Society Saturday, May 26, 2012, during Fleet Week New York. The Cutter Eagleis a 295-foot barque used as a training cutter for future officers of the Coast Guard and is one of only two active commissioned sailing vessels in American military service.

The National Maritime Historical Society is a not-for-profit membership organization founded in 1963, with the mission to raise awareness of the nation's maritime history and heritage.

“We’ve had a long relationship with the National Maritime Historical Society and they have always gone a long way in trying to educate others on maritime history and current issues,” said Capt. Eric Jones, Commanding Officer of the Cutter Eagle. The organization republished The Skipper and the Eagle, a book about Capt. Gordon McGowan and his crew, who brought the Eagle to America from Germany, said Jones.
