First sergeants. They’re often revered — if sometimes feared — among junior enlisted Marines. When evidence of mischief, stupidity or worse arises, a first sergeant is likely to be the one who drops the hammer. If a slacker is just going through the motions, it’s often the first sergeant who delivers a timely kick in the pants.
