Anthony Swofford’s first publication inspired a movie that, for better or worse, has become part of the Marine Corps’ cultural DNA. “Jarhead,” starring Jake Gyllenhaal and released in 2005, was based on Swofford’s experience as a scout sniper with 2nd Battalion, 7th Marines, during the Persian Gulf War. Its success launched Swofford to stardom — and into a world of money, sex and drugs.
