MINERVA to Publish Book by Disabled Woman Veteran

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MINERVA CENTER WILL PUBLISH BOOK BY DISABLED WOMAN VETERAN

The MINERVA Center, Inc., a non-profit educational foundation with headquarters in Pasadena, Maryland, announced that it has acquired publication rights to a long-awaited book by Donna M. Dean, Ph.D. entitled Warriors Without Weapons: The Victimization of Military Women. The book will be published in October.

Dr. Dean, a trained psychologist, was a victim of sexual and non-sexual trauma during her 18-year career in the Navy. Now a 100% permanently disabled veteran suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder she can no longer maintain a clinical practice. But before her disability became total, she was well-known as a mental health therapist working with women veterans suffering from PTSD. For many years she was deeply involved with attempts to improve services for women veterans in VA facilities.

In Warriors Without Weapons, Dr. Dean shares her personal experiences while in the military and later while applying for benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs. Her analysis of PTSD in military women includes painfully frank interviews with traumatized veterans illuminated by Dr. Dean's sensitive understanding and professional insights. But the book also reflects the author's own agony and rage. The book is a wounded healer's gift to traumatized women veterans, to their therapists, to the friends and families who love them, and to the American public whose understanding of the horrors many women have faced while serving their country is essential to preventing future abuse and suffering.

"Warriors Without Weapons is a book only the MINERVA Center could publish," says Dr. Linda Grant De Pauw, founder and president of the Center. "The book is too personal and passionate for university presses and too scholarly and practical for trade publishers. The purpose of the MINERVA Center is to provide information and inspiration on subjects relating to women in war and women and the military, so Dr. Dean's book is exactly right for us." De Pauw pointed to a previous publication of the Center as an example. "When we published An Uncommon Soldier: The Civil War Letters of Sarah Rosetta Wakeman in 1994, no other publisher wanted it. Now it is recognized as an essential work on women in the Civil War."

Prepublication review copies of Warriors Without Weapons are available through the MINERVA Center. Dr. Dean lives in seclusion in Westport, Washington and is not available for interviews.

Subject: Call for fiction/poetry for special Minerva Quarterly Issue
Date: 97-06-18 01:30:40 EDT
From: STEAMGENE@aol.com

MINERVA: Quarterly Report on Women and the Military will have a special issue dedicated to fiction and poetry dedicated to women and the military and/or war. The fiction may range from fantasy to realistic, from historical fiction to science fiction. Woman may be warriors, nurses, service wives, service daughters, or volunteers to assist the military. The woman's role must be positive, which does not mean she must support the military. (I'm thinking particularly here of the anti-war effort of American girls and women during Vietnam as well as World War II anti-fascist partisan activity.) No gratuitous sex or violence will be accepted. Any length up to 6000 words will be accepted, but brevity will be a plus. No epic poems. Quite frankly, this is a one of a kind issue and I, for one, would like to see as many different views as possible. Deadline for submission is midnight, EDT, 31 August, 1997. The preferred format for submission is cut and paste to a email message. DO NOT ATTACH A FILE. IT WILL NOT BE OPENED. If the story is too long for one message, simply divide it and send in parts, clearly labelled. If you show this to a friend who is a writer but not on the Internet, contact the editor for mailing instructions. Guest editor is Gene Moser. Gene has a bachelor's degree in English from The College of William and Mary and has poetry, nonfiction and fiction published in various periodicals. He is an active Minerva on-line participant. Gene is a retired Army Field Artillery Lieutenant Colonel, an Army brat, and teaches high school English. Submissions should be to him at: steamgene@aol.com or footlocker@military-brats.com

The MINERVA List

MINERVA "Information and Inspiration"

Women and War + Women and the Military

Announcing the MINERVA List Discussion on women and the military and women in war. This list is sponsored by The MINERVA Center, Inc., a non-profit educational foundation devoted to promoting the study of women and the military and women in war.

Since 1983, the Center has pursued its mission through print publication. We have two quarterly periodicals: "MINERVA: Quarterly Report on Women and the Military" which carries major articles by historians, sociologists, political scientists and other scholars as well as contributions from independent researchers, oral histories, bibliographies, and occasionally short stories and poetry. The second publication is "Minerva's Bulletin Board," an international news magazine on women and the military which carries brief news items from around the world as well as a column of Letters to MINERVA and a regular column contributed by WANDAS.

The MINERVA Center also publishes books. In 1994 we published Lauren Cook Burgess, ed., "An Uncommon Soldier: The Civil War Letters of Sarah Rosetta Wakeman, alias Private Lyons Wakeman, 153rd Regiment, New York State Volunteers," which will have a paperback edition released by Oxford University Press in March 1996. In December, 1996 we released a special Fiftieth Anniversary paperback edition of C. Kay Larson, "'Til I Come Marching Home: A Brief History of American Women in World War II ."

Dr. Linda Grant De Pauw, Ph.D., the President of The MINERVA Center, is also Professor of History at The George Washington University, which is the only institution offering graduate training in the women's military history specialty. This list was given a jump start in September 1995 by the students enrolled in her Reading Seminar on Women and War.

The MINERVA list is open to anyone with a serious interest in its subject matter and encourages a variety of contributions. We offer a forum for exchange between scholars and for the current concerns of active duty women and women veterans (including "civilian" veterans like members of the Red Cross and military wives). We are eager to receive personal memories, inquiries, unsolicited book reviews, information on meetings, and cross-postings from other parts of cyberspace.

MINERVA is a moderated list, that is, it is edited to filter out extraneous messages (like requests to subscribe) or items that do not belong on the list because they are not relevant to our subject matter. We will also edit out "flames" or other material that does not contribute to The MINERVA Center's mission to provide "information and inspiration."
